June 10, 2021
Agenda
* Legal entity / foundation
** 5apps has an idea to discuss
* ...

Notes
* 5apps is currently hosting the Kosmos infrastructure, invested in Kosmos early (domain name, expenses in the past).
** In the process of being dissolved/put on autopilot as much as possible.
*** Not as interested in the deploy hosting aspect, but still want to deploy RS etc.
*** Due to Brexit the process is being expedited. 5apps is registered as a UK Ltd but has a dutch bank, being kicked out of dutch bank.
*** Lots of new signups for RS at the moment, traction. Lots of potential crossover into Kosmos
*** Not sure about app deploy aspect, shut it down?
** One option: Turn company into a Dutch limited (very complicated)
** Other option: donate company and assets to Kosmos foundation

* Kosmos needs a legal entity to hold trademarks and domains, as well as rent servers etc. which can't be done with a smart contract. This needs to eventually be resolved.
** What if: Donate assets and liabilities of 5apps (userbase, infra) to Kosmos foundation. (Create Kosmos foundation)
** Existing and new 5apps accounts already fit the mold for possible Kosmos users
** Possibility to accept financial contributions (to issue Kredits for financial contributions)

* Process
** Need to create Kosmos foundation first. Where is best to establish a foundation? Costs, legal ease, etc. ?
*** EU (Switzerland, Netherlands), US (Wyoming), El Salvador, Paraguay, Caymans, Mauritius, Seychelles ... ?
*** What about entity location effecting costs for services outside of the country?
*** Language is helpful (German or English++)
*** Legal simplicity++
*** What type of legal entity?
**** Not for profit
**** Foundation
**** Just a software company/business?
*** https://www.axelquack.capital/
** Salvage 5apps codebase, incorporate what we want to use in Kosmos
** Liquidate 5apps and solve as a legal entity for Kosmos
** So the Kosmos Foundation would basically own 5apps the company
** Establish a board, with a statute that binds the board decisions to whats being decided by votes on chain.

* Next Steps
** Compile notes, questions, issues (documented here, can be clarified and possibly create a separate page to document the process)
** Research options further, ask around for recommendations for a legal entity of some type. (@raucao, @bumi)

Apr 22, 2021
Agenda
* Chat
** Sockethub release for Hyperchannel release and deployment

Notes
* Sockethub
** Finalize socket.io PR before tagging release

Apr 15, 2021
Notes
* Hyperchannel
** Updated all deps, introduced Tailwind CSS. Ready for feature action.
* Sockethub
** Some housekeeping done. A blocking issue in master to be fixed.
* Kredits
** Finalized the last 2 cycles according to the changes agreed upon before
** Some issues with Electrum co-signer pool. People not getting txs from it reliably.
** Bumi started working on some prerequisites for the migration script, for moving kredits data to other chains/mainchains
** raucao looked a bit into RSK again; seems like it could be an option for first mainnet deployment (avg tx fee ~$0.09)

Apr 8, 2021
Agenda
* Kredits grants
** Implications of payout threshold as planned before

Notes
* Kredits grants
** After discussion we determined that, instead of skipping payouts using a threshold number, the "salary"-to-"dividend" ratio should be adjusted. This will prevent skipping payouts when it's unjustified, and should create more incentive for active work. We'll adjust from 50/50 to 61.8/38.2 (golden ratio). The change will be retroactive for the last 3 months of the 6 month trial run.
* Chat
** Hyperchannel updated, and some fixes. Tailwind introduction next, then feature bonanza.
* Infra
** greg and raucao will finish migration of ejabberd cluster to private network

Mar 18, 2021
Agenda
* Kredits grants
** Minimum overall kredits amount issued to trigger payouts?
* Sockethub

Notes
* Sockethub
** Refactoring, code coverage and linting, switching to Bull queue (from Kue). XMPP pairing with raucao and slvrbckt will happen today.

* Kredits
** How do we deal with cycles with little work done. Paying the same cycle grants as in normal/busy months seems unfair. Some options discussed:
*** Minimum amount of KS issued in cycle (static number, or calculated dynamically)
*** 6-month grant cycles (vs. 1 month)
*** Development velocity effects payout amount for cycle and dividends
** Conclusion: Take the average of kredits issued in 3 previous cycles (velocity/difficulty), which defines the payout threshold. If threshold isn't reached, there are no payouts for that cycle but the newly issued Kredits are carried over (so no work is unaccounted for). The next cycle payout is made once the threshold is reached again (easier over time with less activity, due to taking the averages from the previous cycles).
** Eventually, we would like a dashboard with these details. In the meantime use the Discourse forums so we can evaluate the new part of the process.

Jan 21, 2021
Agenda
* Cycle payouts

Notes
* The cycle payout spreadsheet updated by @raucao based on previous call with an update funds balance and actual numbers / contributions for all developers,
** TODO: for kredits that haven’t been paid out (too small or no address) we need to document them for devs to claim in the future. (@raucao)
** You could optionally have your payout address be a receiving address of the community wallet if you wanted to keep your reward in the community
** Needs someone to verify amounts (@slvrbckt)
* Kredits web dashboard should have a view for contributions within a cycle
* Sockethub priorities - IRC connect bug and breaking up XMPP tasks into easy to tack pieces (@slvrbckt)
* @greg and @raucao to pair on postgresql work again

Jan 7, 2021
Agenda
* Chat (deploying new Sockethub and Hyperchannel)
* Infrastructure updates
* Kredits grants

Notes
* Cannot deploy Hyperchannel/Sockethub yet, @galfert will create missing issue (from PR discussion)
* The first kredits grants trial/experiment started in November, before the huge BTC price jump, so we agreed to lower the payout pool to 0.3 BTC to be used as the payout pool for the duration of 6 months from the first cyle

* Location: Sambuca di Sicilia, Italy (HackerHouse/L6) + Remote (Zoom, or Jitsi Meet, or similar)
* Dates: October 10-11, 2020

All core contributor hands on deck! After having drifted on the oceans for a while, we need to chart a good course and set the sails.

With all the basics for rapid feature development finally in place before this year's gathering, we'll be able to focus entirely on planning for, and hacking on, Kosmos Chat and Kosmos Services. And with our new initial budget, we can also start trialing our ideas for a sustainable, co-operative, open-source organization via Kosmos Kredits. Let's create a new roadmap and see where it takes us!

Dates
Everyone is invited in October to visit Sicily and HackerHouse for a while and co-work from there (both on Kosmos and non-Kosmos stuff). In addition to the flexible long-form gathering, we will have two days or so of focused sessions, in which we will discuss and collaborate on the important topics.

Dates for the Summit: October 10/11.

Accommodations
There are some beds at the house itself, and also a variety of apartments in walking distance that we can use. For leisure time, there are both beaches and mountains, as well as old towns and ruins dating back to hundreds of years before the rise of Rome. Go explore!

Getting there
Airports PMO and TPS are both ~1:15 hrs drive to Sambuca. PMO serves the most destinations. Please coordinate with others for sharing rental cars and/or getting picked up from the airport.

COVID-19 notes
Sambuca hasn't recorded a single case to date, and there are currently no travel restrictions in Italy for EU residents. Everything is open for business, but mask usage is currently required for shared indoor spaces other than restaurants. These notes will be kept up to date until the summit.
It seems to enter Sicily a registration is needed through their Sicilia Si Cura form or app.

Remote participation
* Location: Sambuca di Sicilia, Italy (HackerHouse/L6) + Remote (Zoom, or Jitsi Meet, or similar)
* Dates: October 10-11, 2020

Everyone is invited in October to visit Sicily and HackerHouse for a while and co-work from there (both on Kosmos and non-Kosmos stuff). In addition to the flexible long-form gathering, we will have two days or so of focused sessions, in which we will discuss and collaborate on the important topics.
Dates for the Summit: October 9/10/11 (main day on Saturday).
* Set up video conferencing software and room(s) (Jitsi Meet?)
* Set up Etherpad(s) or similar, for live collaborative docs
* Set up dedicated chatroom(s) for the summit? (look at Jitsi meet XMPP integration first)
* Create agenda with topics to discuss/work on (public or not?)
* Create session schedule (Unconf style. Just agree on session times and perhaps mods beforehand, so people can plan lunch, dinner, etc.)
Kosmos Chat (ex Codename 67P) is a group communication application, based exclusively on open protocols, standards, and data formats. All of its components can be either self-hosted or connected to hosted services. An alpha version is already in use by developers, and a public beta version is planned for early 2020.
Kredits
Kredits are a system for tracking project contributions, enabling the fair and transparent use of project funds, as well as improving project management and governance. After a couple of years of experimentation, we finally started issuing kredits in production earlier this year. Check out the public contribution dashboard if you're interested.

Galfert: Change domain to kosmos.chat

Kosmos Chat (ex Codename 67P) is a team communication application based exclusively on open protocols, standards, APIs, and data formats. All of its components are free software, published under open-source licenses. User-facing programs are built upon the Web Platform, communicating with server components via HTTP and WebSockets.

Please note: this wiki is protected by an anti-spam service, which can be a bit overzealous in blocking registrations and edits. If your signup or edit is blocked, please contact us and we'll get you sorted! See below for various contact options.

Building blocks
Kosmos consists of several components, all of which can be configured separately, and thus be either hosted by a provider or self-hosted by the user/organization. These are:

* Sockethub server for facilitating client/server communication between the Web client and the multiple protocols/backends/APIs it needs to talk to (e.g. IRC, SMTP, OStatus, Twitter, GitHub, SMS gateways, TURN etc.)
* RemoteStorage server for storing all user data in a user-defined/controlled storage backend
* IRC or XMPP server for private communication servers (not needed for personal usage on public servers)
* Web client, written in Ember.js, using sockethub-client.js and remoteStorage.js
* Daemon for logging channels, handling incoming notifications (e.g. Webhooks), sending push notifications (e.g. for offline mentions). Functionality is currently being prototyped with Hubot scripts (running on botka and hal8000).

Technical overview

Goals
* Provide users/organizations/businesses with a modern, full-featured team communication solution, which is easy to set up and use
* Eventually provide a fully hosted, one-click-setup solution for private team communication (keeping the possibility to exchange any component at will, e.g. storing all data on user-controlled remoteStorage servers
* Use common, open, documented data formats for storing all data, thus making it possible to use/manage/input stored data from other apps (no matter if new or existing). This is where the remoteStorage protocol really shines compared to all other personal data storage protocols made for the Web.
* Make it possible for users to be part of and use both public and private channels/spaces/servers at the same time and in the same window (no more Campfire/HipChat/Slack for work and clients, and IRC only for open-source and hobby, all in different apps)
* Always keep the whole application in a state that can be deployed by anyone (with the necessary skills) who wishes to self-host the whole system. That explicitly includes documentation for doing so.
* Enable *anyone* to join the conversation on public servers by offering a great Web client, making it easy to connect, register nicks, auto-log and replay messages while away — all the nitty-gritty details that even software developers struggle with these days
* Be backwards-compatible to plain text chat/clients
* Have an excellent mobile client (or multiple)
* Make use of the latest Web Platform standards, not caring about backwards-compatibility in Web runtimes (much). Kosmos is a modern Web application, and people not running modern Web runtimes can use plain IRC clients.

We also summarized our goals for a grant application with the Prototype Fund in German language on 31/03/2017: see Prototype Fund
Notes
Current state
* all servers currently sponsored by 5apps
* beeing able to track expenses soon would be nice
* infrastructure is all documented at https://wiki.kosmos.org/Infrastructure
* most of services on Andromeda are not currently configured via chef or anything else
* started to experiment with Kubernetes in December
* greg started setting ejabberd via Chef
* raucau started to setup Drone CI on GKE
* not having CI on Gitea yet is preventing moving our repos there for now
* memory issues with IPFS should be fixed now (after the last update)

Plans
* XMPP server:
** need a cluster on seperate servers (requires external DB server)
** open PR at https://gitea.kosmos.org/kosmos/chef/pulls/9 for Chef config
* Mastodon:
** move user files from S3
* Gitea:
** waiting for Drone support on Kubernetes ATM
** need HAProxy ingress setup to stop paying for an expensive load balancer
* IPFS:
** should run some more nodes on other servers/machines
** making Kredits be configurable to use your own IPFS node would be nice
* Ethereum:
** would be nice to have our own node running on a separate server (it's using a lot of resources)
** maybe run a RSK node?
* BTCPay server:
** create a multi-sig wallet and add its XPub to BTCPay

Action items
* need to split up the chef PR for ejabberd
* check out Mastodon code for possible remoteStorage integration for user files
* max is going to run IPFS on his homeserver
* look into https://www.rsk.co for deploying the Kredits contracts
* look into config options to minimize resource usage of an Ethereum node
* create Letsencrypt and Nginx config for BTCPay
* create Letsencrypt and Nginx config for payments API

# Plan project-specific meetings, with the aim of creating detailed roadmaps
# Summary and action items

Log
Current state
Chat
SocketHub
* XMPP functionality basics seem to all working now
* needs more real life usage
* not tagged a release yet, needs some language changes
* will hopefully be tagged sometime next week
* XMPP extensions (XEPs) could be passed through Sockethub to Hyperchannel for first usage and prototyping, then actual implementation in Sockethub when more experience has been gained
* possible option to use BOSH instead of Sockethub when we see that Sockethub slows us down too much

Hyperchannel
* basics are working for both IRC and XMPP
* usable on mobile now
* needs proper onboarding
** should be simple for a channel creator / foss project maintainer to create something for their project
* avatars for XMPP channels would be nice
* different grouping for channels and direct chat messaging would be nice

XMPP
* we have a (public) XMPP server running (using ejabberd) for kosmos.org
* first experience is really good

Summary: looks like most parts are already in place to get it to a state for public demo

Kredits
* UI has a pretty good setup
* Mmber frontend was worked on a lot, integration works pretty well now
* had some difficulties with the contracts
* blocking issue was trying to implement everything in the contract
* might be better to not have everything decentralized but move some of the stuff to the bot
** would allow easier implementation by not have everything on-chain
* thinking about changing to automatically confirm smaller amounts after a certain time unless someone vetoed (which then would require an actual voting)
* bumi looked into Aragon OS for contracts (looking pretty good)
* bumi will update the wiki with his findings
* contributions have a token associated with it now (with additional metadata attached)
** solves a lot of previous issues (e.g. for keeping voting rights and "cash" kredits separate)
* can be used for transparency already, can be made more decentralized later moving stuff to the smart contracts
** coinsence.org:
*** by Karim from Cologne
*** they are trying to create a collaboration tool
*** they consider to use the kredits contract for their coin issuance and contribute back to it

Infrastructure
* Mastodon (kosmos.social) works quite well (updates are going smooth most of the time)
* see https://wiki.kosmos.org/infrastructure for details
* Kosmos Chef repo has been moved to Gitea (https://gitea.kosmos.org/kosmos/chef)
Chat

* usable on mobile now
* needs proper onboarding

* Mastodon (kosmos.social) works quite well (updates are going smooth most of the time)
* see https://wiki.kosmos.org/infrastructure for details
* Kosmos Chef repo has been moved to Gitea (https://gitea.kosmos.org/kosmos/chef)
* needs a separate meeting about further and future infra work
The core team consists of a group of people, who have agreed with each other on several things:

* 67P is sorely needed an we want to use it today/asap/yesterday
* We can imagine this to be commercially successful, and we can see us founding a company for the paid/pro version and potentially working for it at some point (to whatever degree that might be)
* We will take the first step and implement the prototype MVP as a side project. Most of us will come to Chaos Communication Camp in August 2015, so we'll try to finish the MVP during our time there and then define how to proceed
* All work done until then, and (as far as possible) forever, will be published under open-source licenses. However, we want to protect the project name/ trademark, so that people using the name/trademark commercially need to ask our permission, and so that we can use the name commercially ourselves for the benefit of all contributors (incl. non-partners/employees/shareholders).
